: : : : G'day, as an Australian Dianna Palmer fan I've found myself curious as to the Hart brothers mania for biscuits. In Australia biscuits are what you call cookies and I am wondering what exactly are the American biscuits. So if you can help me by explaining the difference or suppling a biscuit recipe (or both) I'd be grateful.
: : : : Cheers
: : : These Biscuit's are eaten at Breakfast as bread but here in AL we serve Biscuits or Cornbread with any meal. Here is a recipe for Biscuits.
: : : 2 cups self rising flour
: : : 1/4 cup shortning
: : : 2/3 to 3/4 cup milk or buttermilk
: : : Preheat oven to 500 degrees f. Lightly spray a baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray. Place Flour in a mixing bowl. Cutin shorting until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. With a fork blend in just enough milk until dough leaves sides of bowl. Too much milk makes dough sticky, while too little makes biscuits dry. Kneed gently 2 to 3 times on lightly floured surface. Roll dough to 1/2 inch thickness, cutting without twisting biscuits cutter(personally I cut my biscuits with a drinking glass) Place on baking sheet, 1 inch apart for crisp sided biscuits, almost touching each other for softer sided biscuits. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Brush tops with melted butter if desired. Serve Warm. (very good!) Amy
: : Here in Tennessee, our "biscuits" are like Amy's,usually topped with chocolate or white gravy. Yummy! We usually side item eggs, sausage, or bacon. "Cookies" to us, are something containing chocolate chips, peanuts, etc. and is exceptional with a cold glass of milk. This conversation is making me extremely hungry! Rorie
: I love Biscuits and Gray but I had never heard of Choclate Gray until my mother in law made some several years ago. She is from Tennessee too and she alway's ate it as a child. I have to say I am not crazy about the choclate gravy. I love choclate but not on my biscuits. Give me Milk gray or apple butter, or blackberry or strawberry peserves for my biscuits and I am a happy camper! Amy
but if you'll take white gravy, and put a little chocolate on top of that, ooh, is it heavenly. It is the sweetest taste imaginable, even though it doesn't look real pretty. My grandpa used to do this when I was a kid, and I couldn't stand to sit across from him and watch, but as I got older, I got a little curious. I loved it, still do. My kids love it too. Chocolate gravy is something you either love or don't like period. I've never seen anybody who was in between. Rorie
