"Ready to Print Silhouette Desire Info"

LAST EDITED ON Nov-11-07 AT 11:53 AM (EST)

Diamond Girl
Copyright: 1984 Silhouette Desire
Location: Atlanta, Georgia
Backcover: The last person Kenna Dean has imagined teaming up with was her infuriating boss, Regan Cole. But they had a common goal - to break up the relationship between Regan’s brother, Denny, and his latest lover. Regan may have had his own reasons for wanting to split them up, but Kenna had made hers perfectly clear; she wanted Denny. Or so she thought. But as Kenna and Regan put their scheme into action, things began to backfire on them. And what had started out as an unlikely alliance was suddenly promising them more than they’d ever anticipated.
Characters:
Kenna Dean: long, wavy dark hair & bespectacled eyes(pg. 7); Secretary of lawyers Regan & Denny Cole. She imagined she looked tall, gangly & small breasted (8). She seemed to have loved Denny forever - at least for the past year; She’s nervous around Regan (10); She wasn’t a timid person & had a temper on occasion, but Regan made her bristle; She couldn’t be in the same room with him for 5 minutes without wanting to dump the trash can over his head(11); Green eyes; She couldn’t remember ever feeling such rage at any man as she did Regan (23); Her mouth had a full nice shape (30); tall & nice legs; natural elegance of carriage (46); 25 year old virgin (52); Kenna is excited to get herself made over (55); Her hair was cut short & beautifully shaped & framed around her face; she looked like a pixie with her slightly slanted eyes, thin brows & high cheekbones ; she had her makeup done as well (55 -56); New clothes (58); Regan tells her she lacks confidence (64).
Regan Cole: Denny’s older half brother; hard, dark faced and his huge physique. He was the most abrasively masculine man she’d ever known. Been in partnership with Denny for 6 months in their law firm. Regan left a lucrative law practice in NY to come to Atlanta to join Denny. Regan already had a national reputation as a trial lawyer (10); Shaggy dark hair (11); attracts women the way honey attracts bees. He’s not a bad looking devil & God knows, he’s not poor (12); superior height, not an ounce of his physique was flab. His eyes were brown with amber specks & they were hard & cold as ice when he was angry. His face was broad, his mouth chisled & faintly sensuous, his nose was too big & had been broken at least twice; it matched his hands & feet, which were equally oversized. But somehow they all suited him. He had a frightening vitality, an aura of pure menace when he was out of sorts. And he was always out of sorts with Kenna (13); Denny told Kenna not to let Regan intimidate her because he’s not what he seems. In a lot of ways, Regan’s had a hard life (15 - 16); Regan & Denny were like winter to spring. Denny was so personable & pleasant, such a charming man. The only thing Regan might appear charming to would be something as dangerous as he was - maybe a rattlesnake (18); Regan told Kenna that she could qualify for frumpy of the year; Regan thought she was almost pretty when she got mad (22 - 23); Regan decided to transform Kenna’s looks to tempt his brother away from his latin girlfriend because he thinks Margo is a money - hungry tramp (46 - 47); He seems shocked when Kenna told him she is a virgin (52); He tells her he knows what it is to be lonely (53); he tells Kenna that he was married for a year before his wife died and it has been 3 years since her death (54); He tells Kenna that she is enchanting in her new dress with her new haircut & makeup (59-60); He owns a gray Porsche (61); First strange exchanged look between Regan & Kenna (61); Regan tells Kenna that his wife Jessica was 6 months pregnant with his child when she died in a plane crash (110); He is 35 years old (165).
Denny Cole: tall, boyishly attractive (8); Denny was just out of law school (10); Denny worshiped his older half brother; his fair hair glinted gold in the fluorescent light (11); He was at his best as a co-conspirator with a sense of humor that Kenna loved. Regan’s opposite in every way (15); Denny couldn’t figure out why Regan was so hostile toward Kenna when he’s usually the soul of courtesy to women (27); He was handsome (31); 25 years old - ten years younger than Regan (165).
Margo de la Vera: dark haired, dark eyed beauty that Denny has been dating for the past 2 months (9); Kenna hated Margo because she was a beautiful woman. The Argentinian woman had a complexion like ivory & the most sensuous figure she had ever seen. Kenna ached to look like that, to have that slinky walk & that air of unshakable confidence that drew men like flies (17).
Abbie Cole: Regan’s step mother and Denny’s mother (148); retired newspaper woman (164).
Angus Cole: Tall, gray headed (149); Father to both Regan & Denny (199).

Friends and Lovers
----------------------------
1) Publication date: 1983 Silhouette Desire #50. ISBN: 1 55166 076 8 (My
copy is a 1997 Mira Australian reprint). Book is dedicated to Maggie Eloise
Cliatt.
2) Characters.
Madeline Vigny: She's aged 27 with pale green eyes, reddish gold hair that
falls in waves to her waist. She has a graceful carriage and above average
height. She is a mystery writer who has just tasted success in her first
novel (The Grinding Tower), and is working on the sequel. John has
nick-named her 'Satin' because she moves like satin when she walks. He also
disapproves of her wearing trousers as they hide her gorgeous legs. She
lives in a small Victorian house in Houston, inherited from her great aunt
Jessie with a huge oak tree that was planted by Jessie's grandfather. She
never knew her mother and she was close to her father, Edward, but he wasn't
outwardly affectionate. She drives a small yellow Volkswagen because it's
good on gas, has good acceleration and it's cute. She describes herself
>as 'a misfit, a little odd and doesn't get along with most people', and she
>likes to try new things like sky-diving. Her one and only love affair was
>with Allen, an architect she met at a writers club. He seduced her, and
>then she discovers that he is married with a child, the morning after.
Afterwards, she is devastated and drunkenly walks around in the rain, and
almost gets hit by John's white Rolls. He rescues her by plying her with
coffee, dry clothes and walking off the alcohol in the shelter of his
penthouse. It was the start of a strange yet beautiful friendship, sharing
plenty in common - like riding, and watching the TV detective show - where
he hero looked like John. He could read her mind and finish her sentences,
and stopped dating other women within a year of meeting Madeline. She nursed
and sponged him for 2 days during a bout of flu.
John Cameron Durango: Nick-named 'Big John', he is 39 and turns 40 in
September. He is 6ft4in with a big muscular frame without an ounce of fat.
He has straight dark hair swept back neatly over a broad forehead, craggy
contoured face and slate gray eyes which turn silver when angry. He is
darkly tanned and his nose has been broken once, and it shows. He has an
utterly sensuous mouth under a thick, neatly trimmed black moustache which
makes him look mature and virile. His square jaw hints at determination and
a strong will. He has a massive chest with black hair, a flat stomach and
long, powerful legs with muscular arms and beautiful hands. John owns and
controls Durango Oil, and can be ruthless when required in business. He also
owns 'Big Sabine' (named for the battle of the Sabine Pass in 1863) - a
ranch which is small by Texas standards but raises pure-bred Santa Gertrudis
cattle with champion bulls (worth half a million each). He may be an oil
tycoon, but he's not a desk executive as he drives himself harder than his
cowboys. He smokes cigarettes, and is a past master at convincing people to
do things his way. He drives a black Ferrari and is a good, smooth driver he
had dabbled in race car driving in the past. He is a widower, after marrying
his childhood sweetheart, Ellen. His father was rigid, hard, very
disciplined and single-minded. Before owning Big Sabine, he was a career
marine. John's mother died when he was born, and his father blamed him for
it. He was raised by his uncle, Donald's father until he was 16, while his
father was in the service. He later helped his father drill for oil.
3) Storyline:
The story starts at Elise's cocktail party celebrating Madeline's book
success. They have always been friends but can't help being aware of each
other. Madeline is jealous (of Melody) and possessive of John, for the first
time in their 2-year platonic friendship. He has always wanted her but has
been waiting for a sign, as he knows how badly she has been hurt in the past
and fears physical relationships. Madeline starts to imagine John as a
lover, and has the irresistible urge to start touching him. She pretends to
faint and John carries her out of the party, as she is exhausted and wants
to escape. He is frustrated and can't cope with it, but starts to make
passes to see her response to him. Madeline resists the changes in their
relationship, but eventually she can't stay away from her friend. She brings
him beer while he is haying, and they literally kiss and make-up. Later that
night, they attend Swan Lake ballet. They miss the second half to have
supper at his apartment and make love. John declares, "I don't want sex, I
want to make love. I want to possess you, and be possessed by you. To take
and be taken. Total union, mind, body, soul?with you, only with you!" He
leaves early on urgent business the next morning, but Madeline's house and
VW have been damaged by the oak tree falling on them during nocturnal
storms, and she accepts Cousin Donald's offer of accommodation. John is
livid with jealousy when he returns, and finds her with his devious cousin.
His wife used to run to Donald after arguments, and he feels betrayed as
history repeats itself. He offers his home for her to live in, but she
doesn't want to be labeled as his mistress and is ashamed and confused. She
does not expect marriage and commitment as he has been against it for years.
He is hurt by her rejection and storms off, which is made worse by Donald's
meddling. They bump into each other in Reno's Italian restaurant, where
John accuses Madeline of following him and insults her elderly policeman
lunch partner. She drops a plate of spaghetti on his lap. Donald takes her
to a disco to cheer her up, but she sees John with Melody and they mention
going to Nassau together, Madeline feels sick with jealousy and leaves. They
next see each other at the annual charity ball, where she arrives alone and
avoids John all night, until a mutual friend, Jack Rafter, forces them to
take the last dance together. John demands an explanation for Donald's
presence in her bedroom while his guest. She refuses on the basis that she
doesn't owe him an explanation, thereby using Donald as a smokescreen. After
that, John refuses to take her phone calls and has Josito deliver all
leftover personal belongings back to her. He behaves like a wounded animal
and drinks a whole bottle of whisky before throwing a pot of African Violets
at the TV when their detective show came on. Madeline becomes pale, dizzy,
and nauseous and lacks energy - discovering she is pregnant. She worries
about telling John while their relationship has soured; because he'll think
its Donald's and she decides hide it by moving to a small community outside
Atlanta with a maiden aunt. After talking to Donald, John tries to apologize
and reconcile but Madeline can't forgive his lack of trust. She refuses his
marriage proposal and crushes a bunch of roses on his shirt. He has a dozen
roses delivered every day, in every color, and has food delivered, phones
her six times per day, and starts to follow her around. She states that she
is recovering from a virus and throws a lemon meringue pie at him. Her
jogging, as well as weight gain, and have her looking different. He follows
her home from shops, when she gets a flat tire. They argue over how she is
looking after herself, so she takes his Ferrari home, stranding him. When he
returns her car, she invites him for dinner to prove that she is okay. The
truth about her condition is disclosed, and they declare that they loved
each other before knowing about the much-desire child, but neither wanted to
burden the other with feelings that may not have been reciprocated. They
chose Cameron Edward and Candy for possible names.
4) Back-cover blurb:
It was the age-old question between men and women: Could friends make the
leap to lovers? He lived life to the fullest. She always resisted
temptation. He believed any risk was worth taking. She thought it prudent to
know the odds first. After two years of friendship, John and Madeline still
couldn't agree on anything - except that suddenly, things between them were
definitely
changing. John felt it in the way passion threatened to explode every time
he was anywhere near her. Madeline struggled with her own desire,
remembering the promise she had made long ago - to never let emotions get
the better of her again. But each knew what the other was thinking - and
now, being just friends could never be enough?
4) Children. Madeline is pregnant by the end of the book.
5) Pets. No pets mentioned.
6) Other Characters: None are mentioned in other books.
Donald Durango: John's cousin and fiercest rival. He has a slight build,
bordering on thin, with blonde hair and blue eyes. He is a gifted artist and
a good businessman, even ruthless on occasion. Madeline describes him as a
'vicious personality' but he is conservative in his outlook and drives a
Lincoln. Donald's father helped raise John and even left him his oil stock
when he died. Donald's life revolved around John and he felt like he never
measured up in his father's eyes. He fought him in a vicious proxy fight
afterwards and it has been drawn swords since. The situation was compounded
by John marrying Ellen, a woman that Donald loved and worshipped. He says
needling John keeps me alive".
Maisie: Donald's house-keeper
Josito: John's house-servant
Jed: John's stable hand. Got drunk and made a pass at Madeline. Punched and
fired by John.
Jessie: Madeline's great aunt. Described as an orphan but is the
illegitimate daughter of a Yankee sea captain.
Elise: mutual friend who threw party to celebrate publishing Madeline's
success.
Melody: blonde viper at party, on the lookout for a greener wallet after
last conquest.
Miss Rose: Madeline's talkative elderly neighbor who is an incurable
romantic. She is a member of the war widows historical society.
Bill Gonnells: Building contractor and school friend of Madeline's. He
repairs her home after the storm.
Sergeant Mulligan: A policemen in the homicide investigation department. He
has a grizzled face and silver hair. Madeline dedicated her book to him as
he has helped her with explanations of the drug trade in the city and
describes how narcotics organizations are structured.
Matt McDuncan: the detective hero from her book "Grinding Tower". Physical
characteristics loosely based on John - tall, moustache, drinks only Scotch
whisky and habitually forces his equipment to go beyond the last mile.

Children note:We find out in Rage of Passion that they have twin sons, they are 4 years old in Rage of Passion. The took after their father but had their mother's green eyes. They are faternal twins. Their names are: Edward Donald and Cameron Miles

Fire and Ice
--------------------
1) Publication date: 1983 Silhouette Desire #80. ISBN: 1 55166 087 3 (My
copy is 1997 Mira Australian reprint). Book is dedicated to Nancy, Rodney,
Luke, Jason, Tammy and Edith
2) Characters: Margie Silver: Aged 25, with long black hair and green eyes.
She is of
above-average height, and looks like a fashion model. Margie makes a living
by writing sensuous historical romance novels, under the pen-name Silver
McPherson. Her younger sister, Jan, was born just before her mother died.
After their parents' death, the girls left Ashton to be raised by Granny
McPherson, in a Victorian house in Atlanta. Margie went to college to study
journalism for 2 years, before her grandmother died. She married Larry
Silver, an attorney, after a 3 week courtship, for security. She was 20 at
the time, and his family disapproved of her. He seemed pleasant but was
cruel. It worsened when Jan moved in with them after the death of their
Granny. They had a
violent argument the night before he died in a plane crash, where he forced
her in bed. He died intestate, and his family sued, leaving Margie with no
money and debts. She worked, covering the police beat, and wrote at night
for her first manuscript. Her most recent book was titled "Blazing Passion"
and reached #1 in the bestseller charts. She has a deadline of one month for
her next book. Margie acts flamboyant, wild and zany as a camouflage to hide
her loneliness, vulnerability and disillusionment about men and intimacy.
She hates being touched and held against her will. Cal thinks she's an
enigma and her defensive attitude challenges him.
Cannon Van Dyne: "Cal' is 39 and owns a clothing manufacturing plant in
Chicago. He has a broad, hard face carved of teak with deep-set brown eyes
and almost black hair, and the look of a human bulldozer. He is graceful and
masculine, made up of hard lines and a hostile piercing gaze and big, dark
hands with a gold signet ring and thin gold watch. Margie initially thought
he was arrogant, commanding man demanding an obedient woman with no
independence or spirit that he could smother. Although he has a conservative
facade, he is really a renegade and she is intrigued by him. His father was
a retired army colonel who was miserable in peace-time and regimented those
around him, especially Cal. They fought and enjoyed every minute of it. His
mother describes him as "tough because he has to be" but never deliberately
hurtful. Deep down he is lonely and keeps his heart out of reach, especially
after his cheating ex-wife Della. He lives in Chicago - his home is
Victorian stone with turrets, bay windows and climbing ivy, situated in
grove of hardwood trees. There is a maze of hedges, rose garden with
adjacent patio, swimming pool and a tennis court on the grounds which
overlook Lake Michigan.
3) Storyline:
Jan and Andy are dating and seeking Cal's approval to get married. To win
him over, Jan arranges for Margie to meet and charm him. After Jan demands
that she dress conservatively, Margie arrives looking like a hooker with
heavy make-up and slinky dress. They argue over Jan and Andy when he insults
her by advising she needs a padded bra, and leaves her to pay the drinks
bill. At their second meeting, the four have dinner at Louis Dane's French
restaurant, where Margie astounds him by ordering in perfect French. They
are antagonistic, but Cal accurately states "you flirt and charm
outrageously, but turn and run at the first sign of passion". But he still
wants her, and agrees to Jan and Margie visiting their Florida estate in
Panama City, so they can get to know each other better. They fly down in his
private jet, where Jan insists that Margie hides her real career and pretend
she writes a weekly political column for a local paper. In Florida, Cal is
intrigued by Margie - passionate yet she withdraws from his touch, making
him want to "storm the gates". She chips at his pride by calling him a
"walking business machine" which increases the tension. After their first
kiss, he mocks her lack of physical response ('as responsive as a corpse'),
totally misreading her fear. Margie provokes him to anger and hostility so
that he keeps his distance, but this makes him difficult towards Jan and
Andy. Only Victorine, his mother, sees that the bristling tension and
antagonism hides a deep attraction between them. After Margie charms
mill-owner Bob Long, during a business dinner, he sees her differently and
tries to understand the fears that have come from her marriage. They go deep
sea fishing together where he states that he feels he could "conquer the
world and feel whole with her". They finish the day by swimming together,
with a memorable underwater kiss. Later, her agent begs her to attend a
meeting in New York to turn her last book into TV-movie and Cal flies her,
but doesn't know the true reason behind her trip. They become even closer
when Margie admits that she loves him. They are about to make love, when one
of Cal's business associates interrupts them, and the moment passes. When
they agree to get to know each other better, one of Margie?s fans approaches
her at the airport, asking about her next book. Cal feels betrayed by her
lies and that she seduced him to help her sister. Jan finally confesses the
truth about their family background and Margie's career. Andy is proud of
her and sides with her, rebelling against Cal, even though he threatens to
sack him and withhold his trust fund. Cal is too proud to forgive, when
suddenly Victorine develops chest pain. She is actually faking the attack to
save the situation, but demands that Margie stay with her when she moves to
Chicago to be near her doctor, Howard. Margie agrees but feels that the
whole situation underlines her poor judgment of people, who end up hurting
her; while Cal struggles to pardon the lies and omissions. Margie stays on
despite the strain and spends most her time with Victorine, or writing, or
fishing; whereas Cal sits and stares at her, regretfully. He attempts to
make the peace by asking Jan to arrange a dinner party for 20 business
guests, which she does beautifully. Cal finally gives Andy and Jan his
blessing, and he also apologizes for over-reacting to Margie's falsehood
because his wife had lied to him for years, and he felt like a fool all over
again. They agree to make their worlds mix, and are eternally grateful to
his mother, with her devious mind and big heart, for making it possible.
4) Back-cover blurb:
Theirs was a blazing passion. Like the heroine of one of her novels,
bestselling author Margie Silver was more than ready to rise to Cal Van
Dyne's challenge. The arrogant tycoon vowed that Margie's sister would never
marry his brother - Margie, however, was determined that the wedding would
take place.
Margie had expected the worst from Cal - but not the cynical game of love he
played with her on his lavish Florida estate. Suddenly Margie was gambling
with her sister's future - and her own - with a dangerous adversary who made
his own rules - until he met his match.
5) Children: None.
6) Pets: None.
7) Other Characters: None are mentioned in other books.
Jan: Janet Bannon is Margie's younger sister. She is a legal secretary in
Atlanta who is poised, accomplished and has short hair. She loves Andy but
Cal disapproves and threatens to cut off his inheritance.
Andy: Andrew Van Dyne is Cal's little brother. He is tall and good-looking
with light brown hair and eyes and a strong yet tender face. He has a
mischievous sense of humor and is 'full of fun' so that Cal thinks he needs
a sophisticated lady, and is in charge of his trust fund until he turns 30.
He has steel under that easy friendliness, and is protective and capable
towards Jan.
Victorine: Cal and Andy's mother. She?s elegant, venerable, charming, with
dark brown eyes like Cal, but an open, friendly face like Andy. She's petite
with a delicate bone structure and a short, soft cloud of silver hair
framing her ageless face. She suffers from angina pectoris, a heart
condition.
Della: Cal's ex-wife - a voluptuous red-head he married when he was 25 and
divorced 2 years later. He threw her out for having affairs, the last lover
being their interior decorator, discovered in their bed.
Granny McPherson: fierce old lady, more interested in discipline than
affection as she raised Margie and Jan.
Mrs. James: Margie?s elderly neighbor with a puritanical streak.
Bob Long: Tall and solemn, disagreeable, introverted owner of knitting mill
doing business with Cal. Has a passion for water conservation and was
formerly a planning commission member.
Harry Neal: Business executive in Cal's company, working on merger with Bob.
Jim Payne: Margie's agent.
Gene Murdock: Movie executive wants to turn Margie's book into a TV-movie.
Nina: Florida maid.
Anna and Jack: Chicago daily maid and her husband, the chauffeur/gardener.
Mrs. Summers: Heavy-set and jolly cook in Chicago who makes the best cakes

The Rawhide Man
-------------------------
1) Publication date: 1984 Silhouette Desire #157. ISBN: 1 55165 009 1 (My
copy is 1995 MIRA Australian reprint). Book is dedicated to Doris, Kay,
Kathleen, June, Mary, Cindy, Sharalee and all those lovely San Antonio
ladies.
2) Characters
Bess: Elizabeth Meriam White, aged 22, from "Oakgrove", Georgia.
Silver-blonde hair, soft brown eyes, creamy complexion and beautiful bone
structure. Her face is described as having an arrow-straight nose; full, red
and bee-stung mouth with widely-spaced appealing brown eyes. She is poised,
brave, stubborn, inexperienced, naive with a "so-elegant coolness". She's
not exactly pretty, but "all class' and a lady, with tall elegant carriage.
Jude calls her "too proud and too poised - a society girl" and "too dainty,
too controlled, too lady-like and not human enough". Her thin,
non-voluptuous figure, and small breasts are also mocked by him as "small
blessings". She has lovely hands and plays the piano. She doesn't make
friends easily. Crystal describes her as "so gentle and caring, so giving to
people you open up to; warm and generous with a poise and sophistication
that I'll never have - beauty fades but character never does." She has lived
in an opulent Georgia house, called Oakgrove, which has been in the White
family for over 100 years.
Jude: Judah Barnett Langston. Tall, broad-shouldered, long-legged muscular
body that is sheer elegance when he moves. He has a deeply tanned face, firm
jaw and often rigid mouth. Piercing, glittering pale green eyes under
deeply-set thick black lashes and scowling black eyebrows as jet-black as
his hair. He's a formidable portrait of a man, a devastating firm, strong
and powerful body, with a face as inscrutable as a stone carving and a trace
of a Texas accent in his deeply measured voice, but every woman's secret
dream. He has scars on his right leg and thigh from shrapnel, after being
ambushed in Vietnam, where he served straight after college. Bess has always
thought of him as rawhide - lean, tough and very invulnerable. He's cold and
hard, impatient and intimidating, sexy but hard - he could have women by the
barrelful but more interested in oil, cattle and his daughter, Katy. He
pilots his own Cessna because he doesn't trust other pilots and he likes
being in total control - in everything - flying, his company, and his
household. His mother died when he was an infant and his father was never
demonstrative (described as "worlds harder and more unapproachable than
Jude"). His grandmother was a full-blooded Apache - black hair, dark
complexion and high cheekbones. He was engaged when he went to Vietnam, but
his fiance (Elise) broke the engagement to marry someone else even though
she was carrying his child. Elise died when Bess was 15. His ranch is called
"Big Mesquite" and it's situated in San Antonio, Texas. There is a typo on
p.24, where it's called "4H". The house is very old and very Victorian with
a turret and exquisite gingerbread woodwork and painted blistering white.
There is a front porch swing near a mimosa tree. In spring, wildflowers
blossom profusely on the ranch - bluebells, Indian paintbrush, cactus
poppies, lantana and Mexican hats.
3) Storyline:
Starts on a cold December day, 2 days after Carla's funeral, when
Jude arrives in Georgia and bodily lifts Bess out of her ancestral home. He
flies her to his ranch while he tries to find a way out of the iron-clad
will that left the oil shares to Bess. The only way to get the shares he
needs is to win a proxy fight, is to marry Bess. They agree on marriage in
name only - the shares in exchange for Jude supporting the upkeep on her
Oakgrove home and allowing her to play mother to Katy. Bess is feeling empty
and lonely, tormented by her mother's traumatic illness that she agrees.
Bess and Jude have known each other most of their lives due to their
fathers' oil company. He was always watchful and oddly protective of Bess,
saving her once when she got a twisted ankle in the dark while on a date
Jude carried her home and punched her date. They would meet up for yearly
re-unions at the ranch but she stopped going two years before the story
starts, after they argued over Katy's parenting. Jude swore badly and
insulted Bess, and she has been too afraid and too aware of him ever since.
They get married in the San Jose y San Miguel de Aguayo mission two weeks
before Christmas. Their relationship is "a merger" but Jude's growing
reluctant attraction to Bess increases the tension between them. He wants
her but hates this perceived weakness and Bess for tempting him, but they
have always made sparks together. She gradually becomes less lady-like and
more human, while Jude allows feminine touches and Christmas decorations and
celebrations in his home, which were previously banned. He goes out of his
way to buy a painting she admired at the airport, despite the display being
sold to someone else. He wants to try for a normal marriage, and they make
love on Christmas Eve. Afterwards, he regrets the complications it creates,
and says "I don't love you. I want you, but that's it". She hopes to change
him, as well as fall pregnant, so that she can love someone who may return
her feelings. Her sister arrives on Christmas day and monopolizes Jude at
every chance. Unknown to Bess, Jude encourages it to make Bess jealous as
she has become distant since their only night together. Bess goes out riding
so she's not tormented by seeing them together, when Jude tracks her down.
They have a memorable encounter on the bridle path - it's so passionate they
don't notice the freezing cold or that anyone can see. Their marriage
remains strained and Bess refuses all Jude's overtures to prevent further
hurt and hide her early pregnancy, but there is a truce of sorts when the
family goes out to exploring the Alamo, La Villita and Paseo del Rio. The
next day Bess sees Jude and Crystal kiss, and confronts them. She yells at
Jude, saying she never wanted marriage and tackles Crystal about her selfish
behavior. Bess runs out the door to escape but falls down the stairs. She is
unconscious while Jude refuses to leave her side as paramedics work around
her. He is in pure anguish until he knows she?s alright. They make up, and
Crystal and Bess reach a new level of understanding after her French count
proposes to her and she leaves. On Bess' return home, Jude is a gentleman
and even attends church. This signals to Bess how much he has changed, and
she follows his advice - "when you are ready, come and get me". She does.
4) Back-cover blurb:
He wanted his fair share - He didn't want her, he didn't even like her, but
he wanted her oil shares and there was only one way to get them. Take her to
the altar. She needed a way out - She knew she could rum, even hide, but
there was more to consider than just herself.
They were bound by an agreement - she was afraid. Not for the reasons he
thought. She wanted him badly. But she knew that to admit her weakness would
be fatal?
5) Children: Jude's daughter Katie. Bess is pregnant by the end of the book.
6) Pets: Bess rides a gentle old gelding called Benny, and avoids a horse
called 'Blanket' named for his ability to fall on people and cover them like
a blanket. Katy also has a pet dog named 'Pal'.
7) Other Characters: None are mentioned in other books.
Katy: Jude's daughter. Aged almost 10, tall and is the image of her
father.Pale green eyes, framed by black hair and a stubborn square jaw. She
hates math and English grammar, but loves chorus, art and band. She plays
the flute, and her best friend is Deanne. She is a tomboy and described by
Bess as "growing up rough' but accepts Bess? feminine influence at home and
even wears a frilly dress for the wedding. She re-decorates Bess' bedroom as
a welcome gift, leaving a vase full of 'mums for her. On p47, she accurately
states "Dad likes to give orders and Bess doesn't like to take them."
Crystal Smythe: Bess's step-sister. Beautiful, fragile and spoiled; she
lives in Paris with her French count, Jacques. She has an exquisite face and
figure with tumble of long, straight blond hair and moves in a whirl of
expensive and chiffon. She never offered to help with nursing Carla but
parasitically wanted a slice of the estate, even hocking heirloom jewelry
for cash. She had always taken things from Bess, and her main ambition in
life is to keep Crystal happy and comfortable. She visits Bess to make
Jacques miss her and by the end of the book, he sees beyond her shallow,
flirtatious act to offer marriage and an emerald engagement ring.
Carla White: Bess' mother. After her first husband died, she re-married
Jonathon Smythe, who ruined things and ran out of money, frivolously
spending it on his spoilt daughter, Crystal. Bess' father and Jude's father
founded a Texas oil corporation together. Carla had a pathological hatred of
Jude and was obsessed with besting him, and her only ambition was to make
sure Jude did not get the oil shares. She was of sound mind when she willed
the oil shares to Bess. Carla had progressive bone cancer for the last 2
years of her life - unresponsive to radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and she
refused a bone marrow transplant. Bess alone nursed her and loved her
despite her perverse, demanding, irritable and impatient nature.
Aggie Lopez: Jude's housekeeper. Small plump figure with salt & pepper hair
always worn in a tight bun.
Elise: Katie's mother. Was engaged to Jude but broke the engagement while he
was in Vietnam, and married someone else despite being pregnant with Katy.
Died when Katy was 3 and Bess was 15.
Bandy: Little, bow-legged cowboy who breaks in Jude's horses.
Adam Teague: Towering, gray-headed neighbor of Jude's. He's known Bess for
years and gives her away at the wedding.
Dr Barnes: treated Bess in hospital after her fall. Round, kindly face with
glasses.

Blake Kemp was a man who knew his own mind and was as stubborn as the day is loving in Jacobsville., Texas. As the town’s leading lawyer, he had a reputation to uphold and he didn’t want the tender ministrations of his assistant to get n his way even if he desperately needed her, since those big boots of his did have a tendency to step on toes…
So, of course, the boss man blew up at pretty, gentle Violet, for having the nerve to, of all things, step on his toes, causing her to leave him in a cloud of Texas dust.
But being a smart as well as a hardheaded man, Blake could soon see that without his guiding light, his life would be in darkness. Only one thing to do-hire her back and make sure that business didn’t mess with matters of the heart. On or off the job
