Rogue Stallion

1) Publication date – 1994 by Harlequin. ISBN# 0 373 50165 X

Part of the Montana Mavericks series of 12 books, set in the fictional town of Whitehorn, Montana.

2) Characters

Jessica Larson

Age 25, she is a social welfare officer, and director of Social Services Department in town. She has long glorious sable hair that she always wears in a bun at work. She has big, dark eyes with long curly lashes – her best feature – but needs to wear glasses and can’t wear contacts due to allergy. She has a pretty mouth and slender build. She is very kind and can project calmness while having hysterics internally. Her father was the town’s doctor, and she lives on one of the oldest homes in Whitehorn. It was built over 100 years ago; it’s an isolated cabin with a pine floor (p.47), on a large tract of land. Sterling calls her ‘little Miss Sunshine’ and a bleeding heart, because of her sympathy and optimism. Later, we find out her secret anguish at the fact she can’t have a baby. She was attacked at age 20 by Fred Jackson, when she turned up to rescue his wife and daughter. She found him alone and he nearly raped her. When he was released from jail on a technicality after 6 months, he wanted revenge and ran her off the road. She had pelvic injuries, losing an ovary and fallopian tube, the other side being blocked and not functioning. This incident makes her forceful regarding safety, making sure all the home visits by her staff are made in pairs.

Sterling McCallum

Aged 35, he is special investigator and deputy in the Sheriffs Department; his call letters are K-236. He has a dark and handsome face, with thick dark hair, conventionally cut. His nose has a crook, and he has big hands, feet and ears; with a wide and sexy mouth. Broad shoulders and hairy chest taper to narrow hips and a flat stomach, with long, muscular legs on his 6foot-plus frame. He has black eyes, a legacy from his Crow Indian ancestry. His mother was an alcoholic who beat him when drunk; he reported her to the authorities when she broke his arm with a gin bottle. After her arrest and death, he was shunted between foster homes – always feeling like an outsider – so he developed a tough exterior for protection. He was a career officer in the US Navy; it gave him a sense of belonging. He specialized in intelligence work, and was fond of giving orders but not taking them. He mustered out as a captain, after making too many enemies and not fitting in with new policies and regulations. He wishes he had studied anthropology. He lives in a modern home at the end of a wide dead-end street; he often sits on the porch watching children play, while he drinks a single beer. He drives a Bronco, carries a .45 automatic gun and wears a huge silver and turquoise ring on his right middle finger. Jessica thinks he is a force of nature – a wild rogue stallion who traveled alone and made his own rules.

3) Storyline

The story starts with an abandoned baby left on the doorstep of the Kincaid ranch. The difficult case is allocated to Sterling after he had a fight with a policeman. Jessica is also given the case. The only clue is a small pink cameo brooch with gold trim. After visiting baby Jennifer in hospital, Jessica gets broody and starts obsessing about adopting the baby herself. While questioning the Kincaid men, they get called out to the Colson home for a domestic dispute. They rescue Keith Colson several times as he acts out. Sterling and Jessica get closer, he rescues her twice after her truck breaks down, and they kiss several times and have a few dates. Jessica’s happiness is destroyed when Sam Jackson comes to town. As Fred’s brother, he starts spreading rumors about Jessica that Sterling believes. He feels hurt and betrayed, and starts spending time with Bess, her co-worker who embellishes the details of her dates. Only when Sheriff Hensley runs Sam out of town and Bess admits her exaggerated lies, does the truth come out. She is bitterly upset at his lack of trust and he storms off. He gets shot in the shoulder after walking into a hold-up at the local convenience store. Jess spends all night in the hospital with him when she finds out and goes home with him to help and cook. Their romance is rekindled, and they both confess to feeling friendship and desire. They decide to get married soon.

Several new threads of story open up towards the end of the book: the Kincaid wedding, where a murder is committed; Keith Colson sent to foster with Maris Wyler after his father is arrested; a midwife recalls hearing of the clandestine delivery from a frightened young girl outside of town. Baby Jenny’s story goes no further and she is placed in foster care. Sterling and Jessica marry in a simple, beautiful Methodist Church ceremony; applying and succeeding in adopting Jenny – completing their happiness.

At the end, there is a sneak preview to Maris’ story – The Widow and the Rodeo Man, by Jackie Merritt.

4) Back-cover blurb

“I don’t want your kindness – or your kind of woman,”

Sterling McCallum gave the plain, hard warning to Jessica Larson. The brooding rogue cop had a stone in place of a heart – and a past as mysterious as the case that brought them together. But this time Jessica couldn’t back off. Something compelled her to stand her ground – and brave the emotions this man had long aroused. Suddenly, their darkest secrets, their deepest desires, simmered to the surface…about to explode.

MONTANA MAVERICKS – Stories that capture living and loving beneath the Big Sky, where legends live on…and the mystery is just beginning.

5) Pets

Hers: Meriwether – big, marmalade tabby cat with scarred ears that turned up on her doorstep.

His: Mack – big, brown-and-black Doberman he rescued from the river.

6) Children – they adopt Jennifer at the end of the story

7) Other characters

NO CHARACTERS MENTIONED IN OTHER DIANA PALMER BOOKS.

*Sheriff Judd Hensley – As tall as McCallum, he is rugged and quiet; when he does speak, the words mean something. His son died in a hunting accident and his wife Tracy left him a year after the funeral. He knows what happened to Jessica, but is tight-lipped. It is suggested that he may be sweet on Maris.

*Jeremiah Kincaid – Tall, silver-haired, handsome rancher in his 60’s with the face of a movie star. Playboy.

*Dugin Kincaid – Pale imitation of his father Jeremiah. Tall, fair, mild-mannered and unassuming; he is in his 40’s but seems younger. He lives on the ranch, following his father’s orders yet still a disappointment to him.

*Mary Jo Plumber – Dugin’s fiancé for the last one year. Fairly new to town, she is described as a sweet little thing but a ‘firecracker’. She is a children’s librarian and appears older. On her wedding day, we discover she is really a nasty con-artist but no one else does. She drinks straight bourbon while congratulating herself for not spattering blood on her wedding dress when she committed murder earlier.

*Baby Jennifer – Healthy, clean, well-cared-for two week old infant. Pretty with big, blue eyes and tuft of blond hair. Adopted by Jessica and Sterling, after parents were unable to be tracked down.

*Colson family – young, lean and lanky Keith, living with his father Terrance, and grandmother Milly. Terrance started drinking after his wife ran off with a salesman. Regularly beat up Milly and Keith when he tried to defend her. Keith hints to the school counselor after falling grades. Always in trouble for breaking rules, picking fights and eventually arrested for shop-lifting and holding-up a car dealer. He allows himself to get caught, and eventually ends up in foster care with Maris. He is interested in wildlife conservation.

*Mabel Darren – mid-30’s, dark and bubbly, she loves kids but can’t have any of her own. She is caring for 6 children from broken homes or orphans, ranging from toddlers to teenagers.

*Candy – Jessica’s young blond secretary.

*Bess – Auburn-haired case worker in Jessica’s office. Prone to embroidering the truth about her dates.

*Daisy – 20 year old cute, red-haired waitress at the Hip Hop Café. Has a crush on Sterling.

*Tammie Jane – young girl working in the convenience store.

*Ben and Amy – Aged 17 and 16 respectively, Sterling and Jessica talk them out of eloping. Believe she is pregnant but encourage them to see doctor and tell parents.

*Jerry Miles – Wife-beater. Jessica rescues his wife Ellen and 12 year old son, Chad.

*Sam Jackson – Sandy haired man who looks much like his brother, Fred (Jessica’s attacker), except heavier facial features, smaller eyes, shorter and stockier. He accuses Jessica of ‘asking for it’ when she inadvertently turned up alone at Fred’s home, and murdering him when he crashed his car over a cliff while trying to run her down. He did not know that Fred was a cocaine addict; Fred’s wife and daughter, Clarisse, washed their hands of him. Sam had been a councilman in Whitehorn, so people still listened to him and his opinions.

*Maris Wyler – Female rancher who takes on Keith, arranging home teaching at her No Bull Ranch. She’s a character with a kind heart despite a tough life. Tall, lean, tanned with long golden hair in a pony-tail, she is oddly elegant. She was widowed when her husband, Ray, was killed in a wreck while driving drunk. He had a reputation as a heavy drinker, womanizer, and gambler.

*Floyd Oakly – The murdered man at the Kincaid wedding, found with a knife in his chest that looked like a professional hit. He was Mary Jo’s partner in scams while in Denver, until he got arrested. She always managed to learn from him yet also outdo him. He tracked her down…

*Kate Randall – Presiding judge in Jenny’s custody case. Easily convinced to grant custody and adoption by the parade of town folk visiting her office, full of glowing recommendations and praise for Jessica and Sterling.
